Our
Story

Suburb Houses

Operation Tango Yankee Inc is a non-profit organization, led by founders, Robert and Amanda Mincey, whose mission is to provide holistic support and resources to homeless and low-income veterans, women, and children, empowering them to overcome adversity, achieve self-sufficiency, and build a brighter future. The organization will help provide housing, supportive services, and community outreach to help homeless and at-risk veterans and their families achieve self-sufficiency.

We believe that every soldier who has fought for our freedom should never be without a place to live or anything else they might need to provide a stable and happy home for their family.

Some veterans find themselves on the streets due to mental health, financial, or relationship problems. Our main objective is to eliminate veteran homelessness in the U.S. and to reduce suicides when soldiers come back. We hope to achieve this through the building of a tiny home transitional community with veteran psychiatrists and psychologists to give proper care.

We have developed specialist services to support veterans by providing shelter and other critical resources for them. We repair, remodel and upgrade houses to build a transitional community for veterans while at the same time teaching them skilled trades to help them transition back to private citizenship after deployment.

Our Vision

“To create a community where veteran homelessness is rare or non-reoccurring, a community of valued and respected veterans that contribute to their community development."

Our Mission

"To provide holistic support and resources to homeless and low-income veterans, women, and children, empowering them to overcome adversity, achieve self-sufficiency, and build a brighter future."

Statement of Need

Statement of need

There is an urgent need in the United States to care for veterans. As the numbers below indicate, homelessness and mental health issues among this population are staggering and unacceptable.

  • 96% of homeless veterans are single males from poor, disadvantaged communities and have served in World War II, Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the military's anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America.

  • In 2006, there were 150 homeless female veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars; in 2011, that number jumped to 1,700.

  • That same year, 18% of homeless veterans assisted by the V.A. were women.

  • Comparison studies conducted by H.U.D. show that female veterans are two to three times more likely to be homeless than any other group in the U.S. adult population.

  • Veterans between the ages of 18 and 30 are twice as likely as adults in the general population to be homeless, and the risk of homelessness increases significantly among poor young veterans.

  • Roughly 56% of all homeless veterans are African-American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 12.8% and 15.4% of the U.S. population, respectively.

  • About 53% of individual homeless veterans have disabilities, compared with 41% of homeless non-veteran individuals. Half suffer from mental illness; two-thirds suffer from substance abuse problems and many from dual diagnosis (which is defined as a person struggling with both mental illness and a substance abuse problem).

  • Homeless veterans tend to experience homelessness longer than their non-veteran peers: Veterans spend an average of nearly six years homeless, compared to four years reported among non-veterans.

  • While only 8% of Americans can claim veteran status, 17% of our homeless population comprises veterans.

  • In 2010, the Department of Veteran Affairs (V.A.) estimated that 76,000 homeless veterans were sleeping on American streets on any given night.

Operation Tango Yankee Inc is a non-profit organization that aims to end veteran homelessness and provide a stable environment for veterans to reclaim private citizenship, thereby strengthening our communities. By building a tiny home community and housing homeless or low-income veterans and giving them a work program to learn a skilled trade, they will be able to find steady work and get on their feet. Within this community, we hope to have mental health professionals, who are also veterans, to be available to those in need of assistance.

Operation Tango Yankee Inc serves every veteran, irrespective of sexual preference, gender, race, etc.
